Another Fire in the Park

Tue, Feb 26 2008

Around 0350hrs, as members were preparing to head to bed, Manassas Park Communications alerted Company 509 for a report of a house on fire at 213 Cabbel Drive. Engine 508's crew then hit the road heading towards Cabbel Drive. As all units were enroute to the fire, a Manassas Park PD unit came across the Fire Dispatch Channel and advised that there was “Smoke and Fire Showing from Side B.” Engine 508 then informed Prince William County Communications that they were responding to a report of a working fire in Manassas Park. Engine and Quint 509 arrived on scene to find “Fire Showing from Side B in the Basement.” Engine 509 crew then pulled a hand line to Side B and began hitting the fire. Engine 508 arrived on scene behind Company 509 and established a water supply to Engine 509. Engine 508's crew then pulled a back up line to the front and prepared to make entry. Engine 508's crew was met with heavy fire conditions as they made their way into the house. Shortly thereafter, as Engine 508's crew was getting a good knock on the fire, Command called for an emergency evacuation due to a floor collapse in the Alpha / Bravo quadrant. All crews then began defensive operations. Once the fire was knocked back and the extent of the floor collapse was evaluated, crews were allowed back into the structure to knock down the rest of the fire. Engine 508 then sent two of their crew members to assist Foam Engine 501's crew with opening up on the first floor, while the remaining three crew members were sent to the basement to begin hitting hot spots. Engine 508 was relieved by career staff on Engine 508B around 0700hrs. Congratulations to Chris Stewart on his first fire!

Another Uneventful Saturday

Sat, Feb 09 2008

This Saturday started out just like every other Saturday with members gathering around the station getting ready for duty, checking out equipment and sitting down as one for a nice quiet breakfast. Just after finishing breakfast, Engine and Rescue 508 were alerted to a possible Townhouse fire in Manassas Park. Unit from Manassas Park arrived on scene and found it to be food on the stove, Engine and Rescue 508 were then placed in service. Around noon the Duty Crew Officer had made plans to meet up with Company 511 to flow water with Truck 511 and to allow some of our new recruits to face their fears before the start of fire class. As members were finishing with hose drills and Driver Operator training at the station, Engine 508 was then sent to fill Fire Station 438 (West Centreville) due to a working fire in Fairfax. Rescue and Ambulance 508 manned the house while Engine 508 was out. Engine 508 covered Station 438 from just about 1300hrs to around 1430hrs and like usual Engine 508 didn’t run any calls. Shortly after returning from crews then regrouped and set out to Company 511 for training. Company 508 trained with Company 511 for approximately two and half hours. We would like to thank the Stonewall Jackson VFD for their time and for the use of Truck 511!
